Statement of Solidarity and Commitment to Anti-Racism
We, the Colorado Doula Project, stand in solidarity with protestors across the nation who are taking to the streets to take action against racist systemic violence and oppression. The recent murders of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Tony McDade have drawn heightened attention to an issue that has plagued our country and world for centuries: anti-Black racism and systemic violence.
As an organization whose mission is to protect the bodily sovereignty of all people, we recognize that reproductive justice and the fight to end police violence are interconnected. The harms against Black people caused by state-sanctioned police violence are part of the same system that threatens Black bodies and lives through racist medical, judicial, educational, and political institutions. A future in which all people have the information, resources and power to make informed decisions about their bodies and lives cannot be realized in a country and world in which Black people cannot go about life (jogging, sleeping, having a mental health crisis, going to the doctor, et cetera) or choose whether to bring children into the world without fear for their wellbeing and for their families.
CDP commits to centering anti-racist practices in our services, educational offerings, and staff development, as well as uplifting the work of Black-led organizations in Colorado and across the country who are driving transformative change through protest, education, policy change, and more. We have made donations to Black Lives Matter 5280 and Colorado Freedom Fund as one form of uplifting this work and encourage our network with means to do the same. Thank you for your support and join us in affirming these truths today and everyday: Black lives matter, Black joy matters and Black futures matter.
