Volunteer Story: Lauren J.
Becoming an abortion doula with Colorado Doula Project has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. My experiences have been beyond what I ever thought they would be, and I’ve learned so much not only from the online abortion doula training, but also from the clients whom I have served.
I’ve had the opportunity to support people seeking abortion, at an extremely vulnerable time in their lives. I provide intake support for new clients, helping new clients find clinics, going over different options, and booking travel. I also support clients with rides to and from appointments, as well as sitting in on appointments with clients. I’m honored to provide a safe and empathetic presence for them, free of judgment and enabling clients to know they have someone with them who has their back along the way.
I’ve supported folks in many different situations. Many have children at home, some are fleeing abuse or dangerous partners. Others are simply making a decision for their own lives. To me, lending an empathetic ear to all of my clients is not only second nature and obvious to me, but so very special to listen to someone who may not have many people to talk to about their abortion. I believe it is my duty as a human being to extend kindness, empathy, and above all, love to my fellow humans, in whatever way I am able to.
One of my most memorable moments as an abortion doula was supporting a client who had traveled for almost a day via bus from an abortion-restricted state. She was understandably nervous, and although I had originally volunteered for a ride only, I decided to stay with her for her appointment, which she seemed relieved to hear. The clinic was busy that day,so her appointment was delayed considerably, increasing her anxiety. We chatted about our lives, our families, even our astrological signs. She had a few questions about the procedure, which due to the training I completed with CDP, I was able to provide some insight. When she was called to her appointment, I stayed with her and held her hand through the process. We put on some music from my phone and I simply sat by her side and assured her she was doing great.
I am immensely proud to be a part of this organization, I believe the work we do is above and beyond that which is expected, and it’s a beautiful thing to be able to provide support to our clients at a time when they need it the most..
